I’ve always said that Jason McCarthy will come out with some new stuff to continue to draw people to GoRuck.
Ingress is a virtual reality game developed by Google. It has been around for some time, but the linkage of GoRuck and Ingress was almost inevitable.
The back story of Ingress is alongside the discovery of the Higgs Boson by the physicists at CERN in 2012, it has also been discovered that the Earth has been seeded with “Exotic Matter,” or XM. This XM is all around us, and can be accessed through a variety of portals. These portals and game objects are accessed through a smart phone app. The portals can be hacked and captured. There are two factions, the Enlightened and the Resistance. I wonder what side the SF guys will take. The game is essentially risk in the real world. The portals are on the phone, but they are at real world locations. The idea of the game is to get people to go out and walk to the portals. Teams try and capture portals and also defend against attacks. Most of the time, this can happen anywhere, but occasionally, the user community comes together in what the call an Anomaly. These are joint events across the world. During this GoRuck event, it was the Persepolis Anomaly that was happening in Bratislava, Slovakia; Washington, DC; Utrecht, The Netherlands; Tohoku, Japan; Portland, OR.
The scenario was that as part of the DC group, we were the special forces of the two factions, competing head to head against one another. The organizers were setting up special portals for us to hack and attack.
The group gathers and there are two types, GRTs and Ingress folks. While the Ingress crew had back packs, they were a little shocked at the weight of some of our rucks.
Cadre was Dakota and BD. Jason was floating around taking pictures and interviewing people.
We broke off into the two factions, about 120 people total, 60 on each side. Contest one was which team could hold their rucks over their heads longer. Resistance 1, Enlightened 0.
Next up we made our logs. This consisted of taking large cardboard boxes, taping them together into a long log type object. Only catch here was while they weren’t heavy, we had to carry them with extended arms.
We moved about a mile down the road to the basin where we proceeded to go head to head on a tunnel of love. Who could get the most people through in 5 min. Resistance 1, Enlightened 1.
We moved another mile down the road and had a glyph making contest. Glyphs are symbols that in Ingress, mean something. The teams had to make the glyphs on the ground as they were called out. I didn’t see this part as I was supervising filling up on water. Resistance 2, Enlightened 1.
Now we moved about 1.5 miles past the US Capital, to a park. It was here where we went head to head, attacking and defending portals. The Enlightened not only lost, they cheated. The Flutter Kick. Resistance 3, Enlightened 1.
Now the last contest was a sprint to see who could get to the Nationals park the fastest. Not sure where the green team even went, but we smoked them. Final score Resistance 4, Enlightened 1. We played the stupid games, but not sure what the stupid prize was.
Once we got to Nationals stadium, we patched, there were a few speeches and some ACRT. Fun event, different vibe, missions, etc… Worth a look if you have 5 hours to kill. Plus I got to meet some other Spearheads including Tyler Kirk!
